Traces

Brief: Writing my own brief to explore how found typography and mark-making can be used as a vehicle for education and storytelling.

Response:
Traces is a publication series celebrating and informing audiences about the workings behind Cornish locations. The imprints of these people upon their working environments, created through their day-to-day operations, add layers of visual identity that enhance the narrative of a place, as visible representations of a community that exist within it.

Location based traces are captured, recorded and designed to create a visual scheme that identifies each location. Screen-printing the designs onto genuine items of work wear highlights the deep relationship between people and the places in which they work and creates a unique visual vehicle by which to engage audiences. The colours are inspired by the locations, and the print placement is compositionally considered, with intensified layering in areas of naturally increased wear.

Translation of these prints are the visual foundation fora series of publications that inform and educate - enhancing the storytelling, with an accessible tone of voice. Varied paper textures and page sizes convey the project’s underly tactility, and a spiral bind is a relevant industrial link.
