No Trees No Seas
Brief: A live project forming an identity for No Trees No Seas, an environmental campaign led by Plant One, aiming to restore woodland and improve the health of land and sea systems. This project was working alongside LEAP
(a Cornish positive impact design studio).
Response: Working with LEAP to explore two route options, with rounds of development and feedback. Key exploration into the joining of the trees and seas into a symbol to communicate the movement in a easily reproducible, recognisable and simple form.
“Simple enough that it can be drawn in the sand with a stick and meaningful enough that it inspires and engages.”
and Megan Childs.

Stage One-
Creating two different routes, exploring approaches and possible directions for the brand.
Megan and I focused on one route, while members of the LEAP team developed a second.
The Images below showcase the route which Megan and I initially focused on.
With a soft approach a fluid symbol features both a leaf and a wave, and a natural colour palette enforces the narrative. Window cut-outs embrace the flow and gentle approach, carrying the message throughout.
Text is highlighted using different variations of the typeface, such as serif within a sanserif sentence, expressing the duality between the trees and seas, and the unexpected harmony between the elements.
Stage Two -
A later stage of the process involved developing aspects of the final chosen route (originally developed by the LEAP team), with some aspects of our previous route being carried across.
Working with Megan, we readressed the symbol, considering curves and angles, and positioning of the tree branches. We explored illustrations in the style of the symbol, and began to think about how these shapes could be used as windows to house imagery.
The final designs feature a palette inspired by the natural world, with added vibrancy and accent colours, A typeface with a sense of clarity and activism and assets and symbols to communicate the link between trees and seas in a visual way. The route explores the concept of no trees = no seas, and utilises an arrow motif to encourage action.
